Moving to Berlin with a car creates a second registration task that is easy to miss.

If the vehicle is already registered in Berlin and you only changed address inside the city, you normally do not need the full Kfz-Ummeldung described above.

Instead, Berlin provides a separate service to change the address in the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, also known as the Fahrzeugschein.

This address-change service can currently be handled through a Bürgeramt, the Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde or, when the online requirements are met, online.

You brought the car from another country

Do not use the ordinary "moved to Berlin from another German city" route.

Berlin explicitly separates imported vehicles into other services:

a used vehicle imported from another EU country; or
a used vehicle imported from a non-EU country.

Those routes can require additional technical, customs, registration or ownership documents. Check the current Berlin service that matches the vehicle's origin before booking an appointment.

The registered keeper is changing

A move and a change of keeper are also different procedures.

If you bought the car, received it from another person or otherwise want to register it to a different keeper, use the relevant Halterwechsel service rather than the no-keeper-change moving service.

Do you need to complete Anmeldung first?

For the standard move-to-Berlin vehicle re-registration, Berlin currently requires you to be registered with your main residence in Berlin.

A secondary residence in Berlin is not enough for this specific route.

This means the practical order for many newcomers moving from another German city is:

register your new Berlin main residence;
make sure your address evidence is available;
then handle the vehicle re-registration.

If your passport does not itself show your current German address, Berlin says you can use a passport together with a Meldebescheinigung as residence evidence.

Can you keep your old licence plate?

Yes, in many cases.

Berlin currently states that if the vehicle remains registered, you can keep your existing licence plate after moving to Berlin.

If you keep the old plate, Berlin issues a new Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I showing your Berlin address.

You can instead request a Berlin plate. If you choose a new Berlin registration number, additional documents, plate production and potentially reservation costs can apply.

Keeping an existing plate can therefore make the move simpler, especially if you do not care whether your plate begins with B.

Do you need an appointment?

For the in-person move-to-Berlin re-registration service, Berlin currently says an appointment is required.

The application may be submitted by you or by an authorized representative.

Can you re-register the vehicle online?

Berlin currently offers an online route for qualifying private applicants through the internet-based vehicle registration system, often called i-Kfz.

Do not assume that because the in-person procedure applies to you, the online procedure automatically will too.

Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II

Whether you need the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II / Fahrzeugbrief depends partly on what you are changing.

Berlin currently says that if the vehicle is still registered and you keep the existing licence plate, presenting Teil II can be unnecessary in the standard case. If you want a new Berlin plate, Teil II is generally needed.

Berlin also notes that older vehicles without a newer Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II may still require the original Fahrzeugbrief.

Hauptuntersuchung evidence

If the vehicle's HU is due or relevant evidence is required, Berlin asks for proof of a valid Hauptuntersuchung.

What if someone goes to the appointment for you?

Berlin allows representation.

the representative's identity document; and
your identity document, subject to the exceptions Berlin lists for notarized or certified powers of attorney.

Berlin specifically notes that if there is no more space in Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I for another address, the Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde is responsible for issuing a new document.

So if you moved from Neukölln to Köpenick, for example, do not automatically book the full "move to Berlin" vehicle service simply because you moved house.

What if you moved from Hamburg, Munich or another German city?

That is the classic Kfz-Ummeldung scenario covered by Berlin's move-to-Berlin service.

A typical sequence is:

complete your Berlin Anmeldung as your main residence;
decide whether to keep your existing plate;
gather your identity, residence and vehicle documents;
