Steuer-ID in Berlin: Tax ID Guide After Anmeldung

September 1, 2026 Ā· 10 min read

After your first Anmeldung in Germany, one of the next important documents is your steuerliche Identifikationsnummer, usually called the Steuer-ID or IdNr.

Employers, tax offices and other public bodies can ask for it. Newcomers often assume they need to apply for it immediately after registering their address, but that is usually not how the process works.

For people who become registered in Germany for the first time, the Steuer-ID is normally created automatically after the registration data is sent to the Federal Central Tax Office.

Important scope: This article provides general administrative information. SettlyGo does not provide legal advice, tax advice or financial advice. SettlyGo can help you understand visible official requirements, organize questions and support ordinary German communication, but it cannot determine your tax obligations, calculate tax, represent you before a tax authority or guarantee when an authority will issue or deliver a document.

What is the Steuer-ID?

The Steueridentifikationsnummer is a personal identification number used in the German tax system.

The Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) explains that it is assigned automatically to people when they are first registered in Germany.

It is personal to you and is intended to remain valid for your lifetime.

That means your Steuer-ID normally does not change when you:

  • move to another apartment;
  • move to another German city;
  • get married; or
  • change employers.

Do not confuse it with a tax-office file number that can change depending on your tax situation.

Is Steuer-ID the same as Steuernummer?

No.

The terms sound similar, but they are not interchangeable.

Steuer-ID / Identifikationsnummer

This is the personal, lifetime identification number issued by the BZSt.

It identifies an individual person in German tax procedures.

Steuernummer

A Steuernummer is generally assigned by a tax office for a particular tax case or activity.

For example, self-employed people or businesses may receive a Steuernummer from their Finanzamt after completing the appropriate tax registration process.

A newcomer starting a normal salaried job may need their Steuer-ID without ever having independently applied for a Steuernummer.

Do you apply for a Steuer-ID after Anmeldung?

Usually not.

Berlin's official Steueridentifikationsnummer service says that when someone moving from abroad registers for the first time with the local registration authority, the registration data is forwarded to the BZSt.

The BZSt then assigns the Steuer-ID and sends the notification by letter to the registered address.

So the normal sequence is:

  1. complete your first Anmeldung in Germany;
  2. the registration authority sends the relevant data to the BZSt;
  3. the BZSt assigns your Steuer-ID; and
  4. the BZSt sends the number to your registered address.

There is normally no separate Steuer-ID application you need to submit immediately after the Anmeldung.

How long does the Steuer-ID take after Anmeldung?

There is no useful reason to panic after only a few days.

The official BZSt guidance specifically tells people to request the number again if they still have not received the letter within three months of their first registration in Germany.

Berlin gives the same three-month threshold in its official service information.

That does not mean every letter takes three months. It means three months is the official point at which the authorities specifically tell you to take the next step if nothing has arrived.

If an employer needs the number earlier, first check whether you already have it from another German document before requesting a duplicate.

Where is the Steuer-ID letter sent?

The BZSt normally sends the notification to your registered address.

Berlin's Welcome Center warns that your name should be clearly visible on the mailbox so the letter can be delivered.

If your name is not on the mailbox, address details such as a valid c/o or bei entry can matter when registering your residence.

A practical mistake is completing Anmeldung correctly but having a mailbox that does not clearly identify you.

If important letters repeatedly fail to arrive, check that your registered address and mailbox labeling match your actual living situation.

What if I already lived in Germany before?

If you already received a Steuer-ID in the past, you normally keep the same number.

The BZSt says the Steuer-ID remains valid for life and does not change because of a move or marriage.

So if you return to Germany after living abroad, do not assume you will receive a completely new Steuer-ID simply because you completed another Anmeldung.

Look for your existing number first.

Where can I find my Steuer-ID if I lost the letter?

You may already have the number on other documents.

The BZSt and Berlin both point to common places such as:

  • an Einkommensteuerbescheid (income tax assessment notice); or
  • a Lohnsteuerbescheinigung (wage tax certificate from an employer).

If you cannot find the number there, you can request that the BZSt send it to you again.

What should I do if the Steuer-ID never arrives?

If three months have passed since your first registration in Germany and you still have no Steuer-ID letter, the BZSt says you can request the number again.

Use the official BZSt Steuer-ID service and follow the current instructions shown there.

The BZSt does not provide the Steuer-ID by normal telephone call or email because of data-protection requirements.

Berlin also says that, in urgent cases, it may be possible to ask your Finanzamt personally, where your identity must be verified with suitable identification documents.

Do not send passport scans or sensitive identity details to unofficial email addresses or third-party websites just because someone promises to retrieve the number faster.

Is the online request always available?

Not necessarily.

The BZSt is moving services between portal systems, and individual forms can be temporarily unavailable because of maintenance or migration.

On 1 September 2026, the English BZSt service page displays a notice that the relevant online form is temporarily unavailable due to short-term maintenance, while the German portal also indicates that some functions are being routed through the previous portal.

Because availability can change quickly, open the official BZSt page immediately before attempting the request and follow the current instructions there rather than relying on an old direct form link from a blog or forum.

The underlying rule does not change: if you are already registered and your Steuer-ID notification has not arrived after the official waiting period, use the current BZSt process to request another notification.

Can I get the Steuer-ID by phone or email?

The BZSt says no.

For data-protection reasons, the authority does not simply disclose the Steuer-ID by telephone or ordinary email.

This is important because newcomers sometimes search for a support number expecting the authority to read the number out immediately.

Use the official written or online procedure instead.

What if my employer asks for the Steuer-ID before the letter arrives?

Tell your employer that you completed your first registration and are waiting for the BZSt notification.

If you have previously worked or lived in Germany, search your older documents first because your existing lifetime Steuer-ID may already be available.

If you are newly registered and the number has still not arrived after the official waiting period, use the BZSt request process.

Do not invent a number or provide someone else's Steuer-ID.

For payroll-specific questions about what your employer should do while the number is pending, ask the employer's payroll team or a qualified tax professional. SettlyGo cannot determine the correct payroll or tax treatment for your individual case.

What if I am not required to register an address in Germany?

The normal automatic process described above is tied to registration in Germany.

Berlin has a separate official process for certain people who are not subject to German residence-registration requirements but still need a Steuer-ID for German tax purposes.

The Berlin service for non-registration-liable persons gives examples such as people working in Germany while living abroad.

That is a different route from the normal newcomer sequence of Anmeldung followed by automatic BZSt assignment.

If you actually live in Berlin and are required to register your residence, do not use the non-registration route simply because it appears faster.

Do children receive a Steuer-ID too?

Yes.

The BZSt assigns a Steuer-ID to newborn children as well.

Its current guidance uses the same practical three-month point: if the family has not received the child's Steuer-ID within three months after the birth, a renewed notification can be requested.

Keep the child's Steuer-ID safely once it arrives. It can be needed later for administrative and tax-related processes.

Do I need a new Steuer-ID when I move within Berlin?

No.

Your Steuer-ID stays the same.

Moving apartments can require a new residence registration, but that does not create a new lifetime tax identification number.

The same principle applies if you move from Berlin to another German city.

Do I need a new Steuer-ID after marriage or a name change?

The number itself remains the same.

A change in personal details does not create a new Steuer-ID.

If other records need updating because your legal name changed, handle those updates through the relevant authority or institution, but do not expect a replacement identification number simply because the name changed.

Common mistakes newcomers make

Applying for a Steuernummer instead of waiting for the Steuer-ID

These are different numbers. For the normal post-Anmeldung Steuer-ID process, the BZSt assignment is automatic.

Requesting a duplicate too early

The official guidance specifically points to the three-month mark after first registration if no letter has arrived.

Using an unofficial retrieval website

Your Steuer-ID is sensitive personal information. Use official BZSt or Berlin channels.

Assuming the number changes after every move

It is intended to remain valid for life.

Ignoring the mailbox

If your name is not clearly identifiable at the registered address, important official mail can fail to reach you.

Confusing a payroll problem with a missing Steuer-ID

If you already know your correct Steuer-ID but payroll still has an issue, that may be a separate employer or tax-administration matter.

Practical checklist after your first Anmeldung

  • I completed my first valid residence registration in Germany.
  • My name is clearly visible on the mailbox at my registered address.
  • I checked whether I already had a Steuer-ID from an earlier period in Germany.
  • I checked old wage-tax or income-tax documents before requesting a duplicate.
  • I kept the original BZSt letter safely if it arrived.
  • If three months passed without a letter, I checked the current official BZSt request process.
  • I avoided unofficial websites asking for unnecessary identity documents or fees.
  • I did not confuse the Steuer-ID with a Steuernummer.

Final takeaway

For most newcomers who register in Germany for the first time, the Steuer-ID is assigned automatically after Anmeldung. You normally do not need to submit a separate application immediately after registering.

Keep your mailbox correctly labeled, check whether you already have a lifetime Steuer-ID from an earlier stay, and use the official BZSt process if the notification still has not arrived after the official three-month period.

Use the Berlin Steueridentifikationsnummer page and the BZSt Steuer-ID service to confirm the latest procedure and online availability before acting.
