Cologne registration: two different visit options

Cologne’s residence-registration offices are called Kundenzentren. The city says you can use any one of them, no matter which district you live in, and that you can also register online. If you want to attend in person, the weekday matters: Mondays and Wednesdays are open without a prior appointment, while Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays require one. The city adds that on the walk-in days you should expect waiting times. Appointments can also be booked by phone through the Bürgertelefon on 115 or 221-0. For a new home, Cologne states a 14-day registration deadline after moving in, and says the earliest possible appointment is the move-in day confirmed on your Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung (housing-provider confirmation). A rental contract or an informal letter is not enough. If you moved from abroad and register in person, the city says you must appear yourself. Remote SettlyGo phone support can help you ask which office service applies and discuss the appointment in German. It cannot attend your registration appointment or hold a place in a queue.

Who to contact after moving to Cologne

Cologne has separate appointment arrangements for immigration matters. Since 20 April 2026 the city has offered online booking for specified services at its Bezirksausländerämter, the district immigration offices, and that route uses your postcode to find the responsible booking page. The city says other immigration matters should still be raised with the responsible office through its usual contact channels. That distinction matters before you call: identify the service you need first, rather than assuming every residence-permit request uses the same booking form. Parents looking for childcare will meet LITTLE BIRD, the city’s childcare search and request portal, and Cologne’s Familienbüro advises on Kita registration. For home energy, RheinEnergie lists the old and new meter numbers, move dates and the new address among the details it uses to change an account. A remote helper can put your question to these organisations in German. The relevant office or provider decides appointments, childcare places and contract changes. No in-person Cologne visits are included.
